CHAPTER THIRTEEN
One of the things about threatening to go full-blown Orc on someone’s butt, is you really need to stay awake long enough to do what you’ve threatened. That’s especially important when you suspect that someone is planning something he or she shouldn’t be planning.
Because when your weary butt falls into sleep so deep that you begin to suspect someone magicked your water to put you out, the people you planned on giving the verbal smackdown to tend to disappear on you.
“I can’t believe you didn’t tell me,” I yelled at Brock. I wasn’t worried about anybody else hearing me screaming like a fish wife because we were standing completely alone in the camp.
I looked around for signs that the Trolls camp had been there and saw nothing.
Not even so much as a hole in the ground where a single stake might have been.
“She knew you wouldn’t go for it.”
“She was right. This is just wrong. She’ll get herself killed.”
“No, she won’t. It was actually a brilliant plan. Look at the barrier.”
I turned my scowl to the area where I’d last seen a line of Wraiths and blinked. Then I squinted, certain that they were there but I hadn’t pulled their shapes from the darkness yet.
“They followed Trudy and the Trolls farther up the barrier. They’re gone. You and I can slip across the barrier now and, hopefully, find a flower before the Wraiths even know we’re here.”
“They aren’t going to just stand there and watch Trudy stare at them across the barrier. If she’s going to keep them interested, she’ll need to cross too.”
“Maybe,” he admitted reluctantly. “But not if we hurry up and get this done. Now, are you ready?”
I was definitely ready to kick some butt. But in that moment it was his butt I wanted to kick. He must have read my intention in my expression.
“Don’t even think about it, LA...” Brock allowed his demonic form to rise, and he stretched tall and formidable over me. He peered down through fathomless black eyes and let his wings beat the air in warning.
The moving wings sent warm currents of air over my soggy flesh. I almost moaned in pleasure. “I’ll give you a week to stop that.” With the joke, the tension broke between us and I smiled.
He returned the smile. “Let’s go.”
We moved to the green barrier, which seemed to ooze from the ground with no discernible source. The magic infusing it was powerful. It caused the small hairs on my body to stand at attention. I tried to read the energy signature but it was incomprehensible. All I could glean from the barrier was a silvery aura that bespoke a Celestial source.
I hesitated, my foot tingling at the idea of stepping past the magic. “Are you sure this won’t slice us in half or something when we step over it?”
Brock hesitated just long enough to send my pulse spiking. “Brock?”
His brow furrowed. “Trudy assured me it was passable.”
“Just passable? She didn’t happen to say it
